Textures Created to Reflect the Qualities of Materials

Textures Created to Reflect the Qualities of Materials

The following 36 textures were drawn during week three's Design Studio 1 tutorial. The words that accompany these textures (the words the the textures were created in response to) are words that myself and a group of four other people came up with to describe the qualities that different building materials possess.

Crystalline ~ Brittle ~ Expands ~ Porous ~ Fiberous ~ Dense
Rough ~ Viscous ~ Raw ~ Elastic ~ Opaque ~ Reactive

Rigid ~ Enduring ~ Natural ~ Flammable ~ Fluid ~ Buoyant
Flaky ~ Uniform ~ Tensile ~ Conductive ~ Synthetic ~ Maleable

Flexible ~ Transluscent ~ Light ~ Water Resistant ~ Sedimentary ~ Luminescent
Insulate ~ Absorbant ~ Sound-proof ~ Magnetic ~ Diaphanous ~ Flimsy

SketchUp Model of Billowing Space and Descending Stairs

SketchUp Model of Billowing Space and Descending Stairs

The model in the following images depicts a space inspired by a sketch that demonstrates 'billowing' space, and a staircase to accompany it. The staircase is descending down from what is suppose to be the 'above' space.

The stairs are glass treads suspended by wires from the floor above. The wires are angled outward to draw you you into the staircase and the up to the space above.

Front perspective of the stairs.

Aerial perspective of the stairs.

The stairs within the space.

The following drawings of stairs were created in response to either the SketchUp model created in week two or some of the sketches shown in the previous post.

Created for week two's SketchUp model, a folded steel staircase with glass panels underneath and concrete tracing below the steel. The free-standing handrail is steel.

Developed from a sketch from week one, a staircase with glass treads suspended by wires from the floor above. This the staircase descending from above.

Created for the SketchUp model in week two, a staircase emulating columns, the treads alternate between being free standing out of the ground or projecting down from the ceiling.

Designed to be the staircase that ascends from below ground to above. It functions as both a staircase and a retractable desk that rolls on castors.

Abstracted Sketches (Not Complete)

Abstracted Sketches
By May Poole

Currently displaying my four favourite sketches to be considered for modelling in Sketchup.
The two I am most seriously considering are 'Brunch' and 'Floaty' in image two.

Creative Piece of Work - Street-Free Suburbia
Over the course of a year, an average of 37 children are hit and killed by cars in suburban streets in Australia (DIT, 2010). The crude image to the left depicts my solution to this problem - a method of eliminating suburban street traffic from the surface entirely.
My design shows how parking, street identification, basic drainage, external access and basic structural forms would work.
In addition to eliminating the dangers of street traffic, this system has the potential to extract the emissions produced by the vehicles travelling through it, allowing them to be disposed of in a more environmentally friendly way.
This structure would have to be utilised in new housing developments, as it would likely be too costly to construct in present suburbs. Other limitations include height restriction, the mass-use of concrete and weight limitations for the houses that would be build on top of the structure.

A Great Piece of Architecture - Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
This absolutely stunning piece of architecture took four years to design and plan and twelve years to construct. It is considered to be an icon of Italian unity, as its construction and completion occurred around the time of Italian federation (Stein, A. 2015).
As well as being a striking building, the Galleria is quite intuitive as well.  The mass of glass used to form the ceiling not only illuminates the arcade during the day, but serves to act as a 'greenhouse' in the harsh Milan winter, keeping the arcade at a more comfortable temperature.
The building also acts as a link between the Duomo square and the famous La Scala Opera House.

Something Beautiful - An Evening at the Beach
In my opinion, there is nothing more beautiful than a beach at dusk. The photograph to the left, which I took in my first week of being in Sydney, depicts the stunning place where I now live, as well as the wonderful people I've met who have already become some of my closest friends.
